Seedbed Summer

The single most important decision, once we decided to have our own coffee farm, was what kind of Arabica do we plant? The varieties that grow in Sumatra are varied with the regions. However they are not limited to those growing regions. Our farm is located in a higher altitude of 1200 meters. We have great rainfall, no frost and excellent Ph levels in our soil. We can be selective. Our research led us to an organic coffee producer on Toba Lake. Here they are growing the same coffee as Gayo Mountain Mandheling. We have chosen two Specialty Coffee Varieties for our farm Kartika Red and Andong Sari. The history of Kartika is intersting, the Dutch brought this original variety to Indonesia centuries ago, the Red Leaf variety is rare and wonderful. We look forward to our first harvest. The Andong Sari, which translates to “carries the essence” is a Kartika Hybrid developed by the Ministry of Agriculture to overcome some of the problems the original Kartika shrubs experienced. We have first quality seeds known as F1 and a great seedbed that we had so much fun preparing. We have a video of and Leo and Handsome Son called Rolling in the Compost that is hilarious, however the format is not supported by word press. You can check out the video on our Picassa album page. Go to for the links to our web albums. Thanks for stopping by, Terimah Kasi
